Ocean Survival (Playwright) Chapter 107: A Stormy Night
The wind was indeed growing stronger, and the clouds in the sky gradually thickened.
Having lost another month of her freedom to Wu Hui through this slow-boil method, Xiaodie Wang felt like crying but had no tears left. However, having lost so many times, she was actually becoming somewhat numb. Considering Wu Hui's attitude toward her lately, extending this contract didn't seem all that unbearable.
One had to wonder if she was just comforting herself.
"Can we bet on something else in the future? Even just changing the name would be fine. I think 'slave' sounds terrible. Can we change it to a 'True Love Contract'? Everything else can stay the same..." Xiaodie said, grabbing Wu Hui's arm and shaking it.
Wu Hui looked up at the sky. "You're the one who brought out the contract. Why are you asking me?"
Well, Xiaodie currently only knew how to draw two types of contracts: the trade contract and the slave contract. Besides, she was the one who insisted on wagering them; Wu Hui was merely playing along.
Realizing this made her want to cry even more. As it turned out, she had been digging her own grave all along.
"If we can reach the next island before the storm hits, that would be the best outcome. Even if there are no resources on the island, we can at least dig a trench to shelter the raft," Wu Hui said, turning to serious matters.
"And the worst-case scenario?" Xiaodie asked.
"You drown, and I get washed ashore on a barren island to die of starvation," Wu Hui replied.
"My invincible master, please think of something!" Xiaodie clutched his arm, looking anxious and full of expectation.
"Faced with natural disasters, human-level intelligence has its limits." Wu Hui shook his head. "I don't have a foolproof plan either. Every choice carries an element of luck."
He was still too weak. Any plan required sufficient strength to execute.
Right now, the only way to grow stronger was through the game.
Thus, he had long made up his mind to keep leveling up even after reaching level five. However, by then, while Yin Ren might still travel with him, the twins would probably choose a peaceful life, wouldn't they?
That fellow Ziming Du would definitely keep playing, and he would enjoy it immensely. As for the other players, Wu Hui didn't know any of them particularly well yet. There was no need to mention his older sister, who was already bound to keep playing anyway.
Amidst the surging waves, there was no telling how much further this small wooden raft could sail.
As a light drizzle began to fall and visibility gradually dropped, Xiaodie, whose clothes were already half-soaked by the rain, pointed ahead and cried out in excitement, "Land!"
Indeed, there was land ahead.
"Good luck," Wu Hui remarked, showing no particular excitement. "Get ready to go ashore. We need to dig a harbor for the raft before the gale starts."
The grizzly bear, having just eaten its fill, immediately went back to work. The dire wolf was also summoned, and the newly acquired water spider was not left idle either.
Once in Wu Hui's hands, they had to be squeezed for every drop of their value.
As for himself, he took Xiaodie to scout the island. It was tiny, with barely any trees, though a few rocks could be seen in the distance.
It was a miserable little island, completely lacking the fuel Wu Hui needed. But at the very least, it could serve as a temporary shelter.
As the wind and rain intensified, the makeshift harbor gradually took shape. Wu Hui covered everything with whatever waterproof materials they had, directed the beasts to move giant rocks nearby for shelter, and finally created a sheet of ice overhead.
Amidst the thunder and lightning, Wu Hui and Xiaodie hid away. Listening to the howling wind and rain, and the patter of droplets hitting the ice above, they huddled together, remaining silent for a long time.
"It's a bit scary," Xiaodie whispered, shrinking into Wu Hui's embrace.
Listening to the rain, Wu Hui periodically reinforced the ice sheet. The constant drain on his energy left him somewhat fatigued.
Noticing his exhaustion, Xiaodie proactively massaged his shoulders. "Are you alright, Master? Hey, I still have a Demon God's bottle. How about I give it to you in exchange for half a month of freedom?"
"No need for now," Wu Hui said. He pulled out his own bottle, staring at the only option with a different format among the choices listed on it.
The other options were all about granting wishes to obtain various items.
Only this one allowed him to shatter the bottle to restore his soul power and vitality.
Perhaps it carried some sort of metaphor. But even before making a physical choice, Wu Hui had already made up his mind.
He shattered the Demon God's bottle.
By now, night had fallen. The heavy rain brought a drop in temperature, making it relatively easy to maintain the ice sheet.
Beneath the ice, the temperature was noticeably lower. Xiaodie wanted to hug Wu Hui for warmth, only to find that his body was as cold as ever. In the end, she had no choice but to wrap herself in deer hide.
"Well, Master, I'm going to sleep first. Call me if anything happens." Xiaodie's behavior was somewhat lighthearted and carefree, but Wu Hui agreed.
Resisting the storm would drain a lot of his energy, so it was better for Xiaodie to rest early and conserve her strength. This way, they wouldn't both lose their combat readiness at the same time.
Outside, the grizzly bear shivered. Given its heavy and sturdy build, there was no need to worry about it being blown away by the wind.
The squid's tentacles gripped the hull, while a small portion of its body was buried in the sand as an additional anchor. The seawater surged in and out beneath the raft, rocking it like a cradle.
Xiaodie slept soundly.
Her adaptability was truly remarkable. As expected of a girl who had clawed her way up from the very bottom of society since childhood.
Of course, Wu Hui felt that her account of her past was a bit brief. However, he hadn't detected any signs of lying, so he didn't pay it much mind.
Yet sometimes, a false narrative isn't due to lying, but because the speaker themselves has been deceived.
The rain continued to pour. A thick layer of ice had formed over their heads. At this point, Wu Hui could finally rest; it wouldn't be easy for such a thick layer to melt or be blown away.
Actually, there was another minor issue. The faster the air flowed, the lower the pressure. The wind speed above was very high, while there was only a light breeze below. Thus, Wu Hui began to reshape the ice surface and created a few small holes to balance the internal and external air pressure.
He was not only good at chemistry but also physics. The structure he made was highly stable. During this time, Xiaodie was half-woken by a clap of thunder. She instinctively grabbed Wu Hui's hand, only to hear her master telling her to go back to sleep.
This made him think of the other players on the large island.
Aside from Dingyang Zhang, who had probably left a day later than him, the others would likely have to face these waves out at sea. The storm was slightly smaller than anticipated, so it wasn't a guaranteed death sentence. If they were good swimmers, they might still have a chance to swim to a shore and start anew.
If their boats were sturdy enough, they might not even capsize, though they would lose a lot of supplies.
Wu Hui often overestimated the difficulty of situations. This wasn't the first time. Yet, it was precisely because he always prepared for the worst that he appeared so at ease in any circumstance.
Overestimating might waste some time, but underestimating the severity could cost him his life.
"Hehehe, kneel down, call me master, go wash the dishes..." Xiaodie was having who-knows-what kind of dream, laughing quite bizarrely.
The storm seemed to have passed just like that.
PS: Extra chapters every day, so diligent. There are still over ten extra chapters left for this month, I'll slowly pay them off.
