Mr. Li’s mind went blank, yet he instinctively denied, “What are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
Hu Yian stood upright, clearly at a lower position, yet he seemed to look down on Mr. Li with disdain. He spoke each word deliberately: “Not many people know that Yao Dongjia is your son, but I happen to be one of those who know the truth. To be honest, I worked for him for such low wages, and after I was injured, he gave me no compensation at all. He even transferred the IOU I wrote to a gambling house, practically driving me to desperation. If you don’t want me to live, why should I be polite?”
Mr. Li immediately panicked, “What do you want to do?” Seeing Hu Yian turn to leave, he hurriedly said, “Everything is negotiable. You were injured and deserve sympathy. I will discuss compensation with him later, and I promise you will be satisfied.”
He suddenly recalled that his tone had sounded overly familiar with Yao Qiushan just now, and quickly added, “I am an old acquaintance of Yao Qiushan's father. After his father passed away, I have taken care of him in many ways over the years. It’s not what you think.” As he spoke, his tone grew steady and softened, “You should have come to me when you were hurt. Qiushan is too young and inexperienced in handling matters. Rest assured, if I hadn’t heard about this, it would be fine, but now that I have, I will see it through.”
Hu Yian nodded, “Thank you very much, Master Li. I still have to go to the shop to work; I’ll be late if I linger. I must leave first.”
Mr. Li had not yet achieved the purpose of blocking him. Although things had taken a turn, he did not want to make a wasted trip and immediately said, “The reason I’m waiting here is to talk to you. Don’t worry, Mei Niang is my daughter-in-law. It doesn’t matter if you arrive late; if she gets angry, I will explain for you.”
His tone was overconfident, as if once he spoke, Luo Mei Niang would inevitably listen.
If the person standing here had truly been Luo Mei Niang’s newly acquainted lover, hearing this would probably have scared the timid or narrow-minded away from her. Hu Yian was different; he waved his hand, “Mei Niang won’t be angry with me. We are now engaged. I’m in a hurry because I want to help her. Between her and me... we don’t need anyone else to plead. Besides, if you were to go...”
Hu Yian sneered.
Mr. Li felt mocked, and with a serious face said, “Kid, don’t blame me for warning you—stay away from Mei Niang.”
Hu Yian crossed his arms, “What if I don’t?”
Mr. Li gritted his teeth, “Mei Niang has misunderstandings about our Li family. It was because I provoked her that she rashly agreed to the engagement. She doesn’t really want to marry you. I know why you’re close to her. Rest assured, I will give you benefits that are no less than marrying her. Hu Yian, I advise you not to make an enemy of me; you won’t be able to bear the consequences.”
Hu Yian nodded. Just as Mr. Li thought he had been intimidated, he heard him say, “Mei Niang and I fell in love at first sight. If I can’t marry her in this lifetime, I’d rather live alone until death. As for you, I want to see what kind of consequences you think I can’t bear.”
He motioned to stop a nearby empty carriage, “Take me to the Li estate.”
Mr. Li was so angry that his chest heaved. Seeing Hu Yian about to leave, his fury soared, but hearing this, his scalp tingled, and the earlier anger vanished. He hurried forward to stop him.
Unfortunately, Hu Yian looked weak but moved swiftly. Just as he shouted twice, the carriage was already moving.
Recently, with many family matters, Mrs. Li slept until late every day. Mr. Li usually did the same, but today he got up early to block Hu Yian. If Hu Yian came now, he would definitely meet Mrs. Li.
Thinking this, Mr. Li had no time to do anything else and just told the coachman to hurry.
After regaining his memory, Hu Yian was no longer afraid of lacking money. He generously tipped the coachman with one condition: to block the carriage behind.
Two carriages moved closely, one behind the other. Mr. Li wanted to find a chance to return to the estate and brief his wife, at least to make her think Hu Yian had ill intentions and was deliberately causing a rift between the couple... Unfortunately, Hu Yian took the shortest route back to the Li estate and kept blocking him from overtaking.
When they arrived at the estate gate, Mr. Li was sweating profusely. Hu Yian got off the carriage and told the doorman directly, “I’m here to claim kinship on behalf of someone. He is the master of your household’s son who was lost outside.”

The doorman was startled. Having served here for many years, he knew the household had never lost a child. The only possibility was that the master had an affair and left a child with a concubine... If the madam found out, she would surely be furious, and the master’s quarrel would make life difficult for the servants. Being the first to hear this news would not bode well for him. He smiled bitterly, “No way?”
At the same time, Mr. Li rushed up, “Don’t talk nonsense. It’s not true. He’s just a madman. Quickly have someone drive him away.”
Hu Yian laughed loudly, “Madman? I’m afraid Mrs. Li is deceiving herself. Well, I’m just an ordinary person. I can’t afford to offend your wealthy family.”
He waved his hand and laughed as he left.
Before leaving, Hu Yian noticed a young boy anxiously running behind the screen wall at the gate. He guessed the boy was likely going to inform Mrs. Li.
Even if the boy wasn’t the messenger, after Hu Yian’s outburst at the gate, Mrs. Li would definitely hear about it.
Sure enough, shortly after Hu Yian arrived at the shop, Mrs. Li appeared, demanding to see him by name. Mr. Li followed behind her, nervously explaining.
As Hu Yian was going downstairs, a man who looked like a servant suddenly appeared, “Young Master Hu, may I have a word?”
Hu Yian narrowed his eyes, “I know you—you’re one of Master Li’s men.”
The man bowed and pulled out a stack of silver notes from his sleeve, holding them out with both hands, “Please be magnanimous, sir. Don’t sow discord between Master and Madam. Some matters are better left unknown, alright?”
Hu Yian glanced at the silver notes and said, “I do need money, but a gentleman loves wealth acquired justly. I don’t like deceiving people, especially not women.”
He pushed the servant aside with one hand and smiled as he went downstairs.
Chu Yunli, having heard the news, hurried down. Passing by the servant, she didn’t even glance at him. However, the servant’s eyes lit up when he saw her, “Second Young Madam...”
Before he could finish, Chu Yunli glared at him.
“Miss, please help,” the servant quickly corrected himself, offering the silver notes with both hands, flattering, “Some things really shouldn’t reach the Madam. If you think this isn’t enough, I can get more later. The Master especially likes his grandchildren. Consider this a gift for the young master...”
Chu Yunli didn’t even look at the silver notes and went downstairs directly.
The servant was left speechless, “...That’s it!”
Downstairs, Mrs. Li was furious like a raging bull, her eyes bloodshot as she stared at Hu Yian approaching. She asked directly, “You said you want to claim kinship. Who is it? Is it you?”
She looked as if she were about to lose her mind.
“No,” Hu Yian looked at Mr. Li beside him, “When I was going downstairs, Master Li even sent someone with silver notes asking me not to sow discord between you two. This... is hard to say, right?”
Mrs. Li did not expect her husband to have done this behind her back. If he wasn’t guilty, why would he do such things?

“Speak!”
Mr. Li sighed heavily, “I...”
Hu Yian spoke calmly, “This matter is complicated, but it is probably not baseless.”
Mrs. Li had had enough. She took out a stack of silver notes and slammed them on the table, “Hurry up and tell me.”
Hu Yian looked at the silver notes, then at the couple in front of him, “I told the truth. Are these mine?”
Mr. Li wanted to deny it, but at this moment, he could not. As a man, he could not understand the fury and madness of a woman betrayed by her husband. Mrs. Li pushed the silver notes, “They’re all yours.”
Chu Yunli stepped forward and snatched the notes, “Thank you both for the congratulatory gift. When we marry, if you are still alive, the Luo family will send an invitation.”
There had been rumors that Luo Mei Niang would marry soon after the engagement... but now she said that if they were alive when she married, it would mean they might die or fall ill.
Mrs. Li’s chest heaved with anger, but she did not want to argue with her former daughter-in-law. Right now, she only wanted to know which vixen had seduced her husband and borne a child.
Hu Yian remained silent, watching Mr. Li’s anxious and uneasy expression. He grew more interested and lingered, building suspense, then slowly said, “It was my previous employer, Yao Qiushan.”
Mrs. Li was stunned and turned to the man beside her, “Didn’t you say you were old friends with Yao Qiushan’s father and that’s why you took care of him? So you were actually taking care of your own son. You scoundrel, lying to me like that—do you take me for a fool?”
Mr. Li was drenched in spit, the worst outcome imaginable. He wiped his face, “Madam, please listen to my explanation.”
Mrs. Li refused to listen and began listing the businesses Mr. Li had conducted for Yao Qiushan. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She had essentially handed money to others, “I was foolish to believe you were a man of loyalty and honor.” Tears streamed down her face as she said, “I bore your children, helped you make connections, and when the shop had problems, I was more anxious than anyone. Is this how you repay me?”
Too much had happened recently, and today was the last straw. Mrs. Li broke down completely, ignoring the guests, crying and cursing, “Beast! Beast! How could you do this to me?”
Mr. Li hurriedly said, “Madam, do you really think I am that kind of man? Why do you believe the words of an outsider over me?” He pulled her into his arms, “We are husband and wife and must trust each other. Yao Qiushan doesn’t look like me at all...”
Mrs. Li exploded instantly, “Just because he doesn’t look like you doesn’t mean he’s not your son! Hua Ping and his brother don’t look like you either. Did I steal someone else’s child?”
Mr. Li was speechless.
Mrs. Li pushed him away fiercely, “I’m going to find Yao Qiushan to get back all these years’ benefits and money he took from the Li family. Those belong to my son!”
With that, she ran out wildly.
