Chapter 067: Dream, Garage Thank you to Demon Pig for your generous support of a treasured sword.
Chen Fan was momentarily taken aback and instinctively began to say that female star Z wasn’t someone just anyone could meet. But I shot him a glare, and he swallowed the rest of his words. I patted his head and let out a mocking laugh. “Remember, you’re a police officer. No matter who it is, as long as they’re a suspect or a witness, if you want to see them, you can.”
After the disappearance case, the police had already contacted Z, and she admitted that on the day the exorcist went missing, she had in fact met with him. It was just that the officer who spoke with Z at the time wasn’t Chen Fan. Only then did Chen Fan realize his oversight; he quickly nodded and said he would make arrangements as soon as possible.
After chatting with Chen Fan for a while longer, he left. It was already late, and both the little ghost and I hadn't slept in a long time. As we prepared for bed, I noticed the little ghost was sobbing quietly again, just like the last time. This time, I didn’t ask her the reason. I knew she was missing Xuan Yi again.
Though the little ghost had been raised by him since childhood, she couldn’t really discern whether Xuan Yi had been good or bad to her. Perhaps, in her subconscious, life was simply meant to be that way: living in the wild, eating raw meat. After a long while, the little ghost finally drifted off to sleep, and I closed my eyes as well.
When I opened my eyes the next morning, the little ghost was already awake. My heart clenched when I saw what she was holding—a gun, already loaded. I was about to tell her to put it down when she suddenly curved her lips into a strange smile. My eyes widened, and in the next instant, she aimed the gun at me.
She pulled the trigger. A deafening shot rang out, and the bullet came straight at me...
I jolted violently, sitting up in bed, my body drenched in cold sweat. It was just a dream, but it had felt so real I could still feel the sting of the bullet in my chest. The little ghost was already awake and called out to me. I noticed she was standing by the bed, staring underneath it.
I frowned, immediately got out of bed, and asked her what she was looking at. She pointed under the bed and asked what was inside the box there. I looked at her for a long moment, my feelings mixed, then finally bent down, dragged the box out, and opened it. Two guns and a pile of bullets were revealed.
The little ghost reached out to take them, but I snapped, “Don’t touch!” She immediately withdrew her hand, looking at me with a trace of grievance. She looked pitiful, but that dream had felt far too real. I told her sternly that she was absolutely forbidden from touching these things, or I would no longer want her. I had never been so harsh with her before, and her tears began to fall as she promised never to go near them.
These two guns and the bullets had been hidden beneath my bed for a whole year, unused. I’d managed to acquire them during my years on the streets. With gun control being so strict, I rarely brought them out. Still uneasy, I pushed the box to the very back under the bed and covered it with clutter.
That afternoon, there was a knock at the door. I thought it was Chen Fan, but when I opened it, I found Wang Yazhuo standing outside. I was surprised for a moment, then frowned. Very few people knew where I lived; Wang Yazhuo had clearly used her resources to track me down.
Which meant I was probably being followed.
I was annoyed, but hid my irritation and asked her why she’d come. With her head lowered, she hesitated, then said she wanted to visit Luo Feng.
“You know where Luo Feng is. Why come to me?” I asked.
She still kept her head down and didn’t answer for a long time. I didn’t press her. I was planning to go to the hospital anyway, so after gathering my things, I took the little ghost by the hand and brought Wang Yazhuo along.
On the way, I asked her why she always went out alone. As Wang Jianming’s granddaughter, she was from a powerful family, and there were plenty who coveted the Wang fortune and influence—not to mention those who bore grudges against her grandfather.
She waved her hand dismissively and said that ever since she was young, whether going to school or out on errands, Wang Jianming always had people follow her. She felt suffocated, and now that her grandfather was finally away on a trip, she’d managed to shake off her shadows. The little ghost had been gloomy ever since I’d scolded her.
Normally, she and Wang Yazhuo would have chatted the whole way, but this time the little ghost was silent.
At the hospital, Luo Feng was smoking in his private room, the nurses leaving him be. When he saw Wang Yazhuo, he quickly stubbed out his cigarette and thanked her for bringing fruit. She responded graciously, but after that, an awkward silence fell over the room.
Sensing the tension, Luo Feng shot me a pleading look, hoping I’d think of a way to get Wang Yazhuo to leave. Coincidentally, Wang Yazhuo herself said she needed the restroom. Once she was gone, Luo Feng let out a sigh of relief and asked why I’d brought her.
I chuckled. “She’s quite lovely. If you like her, go for it. She wanted to see you, but came to me first—maybe she was shy.”
Luo Feng shook his head miserably. “That’s one woman I can’t handle.” He went on to recount all the rumors about her temper and willfulness. When the door opened again, he immediately fell silent. Wang Yazhuo asked what we’d been talking about, but I only smiled.
Luo Feng changed the subject, asking how the investigation was going. I shared Chen Fan’s latest findings and my analysis, and Luo Feng agreed that Xuan Yi’s alibi seemed suspiciously deliberate. I asked him to help me track down Xuan Yi again, but before he could reply, Wang Yazhuo eagerly offered her assistance too.
After sitting a while longer, Wang Yazhuo said she had to return or her family would be worried. Once she left, the little ghost finally spoke, her first words all day: “Brother Fang Han, Sister Wang Yazhuo is so nice.”
Luo Feng could tell something was off with the little ghost today. While she played quietly in the corner, he leaned over and quietly asked me what was wrong. The little ghost had sharp hearing, so we kept our voices low. I told him about my dream and her finding the gun.
Luo Feng sighed and said that, even if it was just a dream, I should still be careful—there were too many mysteries surrounding the little ghost.
By evening, Chen Fan finally called. After our conversation, I left the hospital and found him waiting outside in a police car. He hadn’t brought any colleagues, and as soon as I got in, he told me he’d contacted the agent for star Z and had managed to arrange an interview for tonight.
At first, Z’s agent had been very reluctant, but when Chen Fan lost his temper, the agent finally agreed. Chen Fan gripped the steering wheel, more confident now. “These celebrities really think they can push the police around!”
Apparently, Z would be staying in the capital for two more months, filming a drama and making frequent trips to the film studio. Since she wasn’t used to hotel living, her crew had rented her a luxury suite. When she wasn’t working, she usually stayed there.
The suite was in a hidden location—supposedly, only the police and the crew knew about it.
After parking in the underground garage, Chen Fan called Z’s agent, who told us to wait there. We waited a long time, but the agent never showed. Chen Fan was growing impatient and cursed under his breath.
The lighting in the garage was dim, with only a few flickering lamps overhead. If I listened closely, I could even hear the faint buzz of electricity. I asked Chen Fan if he found anything odd, and he nodded, saying the place gave him the creeps.
For such a high-end complex, the garage lighting should have been well maintained. As I pondered this, footsteps suddenly echoed through the emptiness. The garage was packed with cars, but not a soul in sight. The footsteps grew louder, closer, but for a long time, no one appeared...
