Chapter Six: The Escort Agency
Former chief steward of Changfeng Escort Agency, He Xinpei, was practicing with his spear in the backyard.
The old man was nearly seventy, with white hair and beard, yet his physique remained robust.
Having trained in Xingyi Quan since childhood, he naturally wielded the spear skillfully. Though his movements had slowed a bit with age, each strike and stance still retained a powerful and commanding presence.
Originally from Hebei, He Xinpei ventured northeast in his youth. It was by mastering the Xingyi spear that he made a name for himself in Liaoyang, firmly establishing the Changfeng Escort Agency.
For decades, none of the convoys he guarded encountered trouble; no thief ever breached the compounds under his protection.
At this stage in life, he had thought he had achieved fulfillment, but as the saying goes, “A journey of a hundred miles is half over at ninety.” Just last night, his reputation suffered a blow.
Helpless!
He Lishan quietly entered, observing from a distance, not daring to interrupt.
The spear’s tip jabbed, pierced, lifted, and chopped through the air with wide, sweeping motions, each move cutting through the silence.
There’s a saying: the spear saves life; the blade sacrifices it.
Perhaps out of frustration, He Xinpei’s practice was more aggressively focused today, with greater force but less defensive posture.
He Lishan hurried forward. “Father, your skills are still as sharp as ever.”
“Nonsense!” He Xinpei threw down the spear and walked indoors. “This thing’s useless now. Using it to guard convoys? It can’t stand up against firearms!”
He Lishan was stunned, unsure how to respond, so he silently followed him inside.
He Xinpei sat down, took a sip of tea, and sighed deeply.
“Times have changed! This year, we’ve only guarded three convoys. Who would’ve thought that among all trades and professions, ours would be the first to lose its footing?”
“Father, it’s not necessarily over. With your skills, you won’t starve. We can still find other work!”
He Xinpei shot back, “Other work? Like guarding compounds?”
“Uh…” He Lishan hesitated. “They’re investigating last night’s incident.”
“The client didn’t report to the authorities?”
“He said, out of respect for you, he’ll give us a few days. If we can recover those two thumb rings, he won’t pursue the matter. But…”
“But Wang Youcai won’t hire us to guard his property anymore, right?”
He Lishan nodded helplessly.
In truth, none of Changfeng Escort’s clients intended to hire them again. Though unspoken, their intentions were clear.
He expected his father to be furious, but surprisingly, He Xinpei’s reaction was calm, almost resigned.
“Even if they let us guard the compounds, it won’t help.”
“Father, what do you mean?”
He Xinpei’s eyes darkened.
“The local landlords are building earthen towers, and around Haicheng, every hilltop is bristling with firearms. I’ve heard that further north, some even have mountain cannons. How useful can our skills be now?”
Though retired, the old man was a seasoned figure—I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
