After boarding the vehicle, she realized that, aside from the seat next to Ouyang Xianyu, every other seat was occupied by an instructor.

“Ugh, what rotten luck,” she muttered under her breath, then walked over and sat in the empty spot, turning her head to stare out the window, lost in thought.

The vehicle started moving toward the military training grounds. Most of the passengers had already drifted off to sleep, while a few quietly read their books.

Yu watched Xiao in silence, searching her face for any sign of distress, but found nothing. After a moment, he spoke coldly, “You were in a car accident. What happened?”

His words startled Xiao, pulling her attention from the scenery outside. She paused for a moment, then replied in a seemingly light tone, “It was nothing, really. A big truck lost its brakes and crashed into us.”

She hesitated briefly before continuing, “But you know, all our family cars are specially modified, so I wasn’t hurt at all.”

Leaning her head on one hand, she glanced sidelong at Ouyang Xianyu, suspecting that he’d actually been worried about her.

The truth, however, was far more complicated than Xiao let on. That morning, unlike her usual lazy routine of sleeping until the sun was high, she had risen early in anticipation of the military training. After breakfast alone, she was driven to school by the family chauffeur.

The scorching sun blazed overhead, and even within the air-conditioned car, the heat was oppressive. Bored, Xiao fiddled with her phone charm.

Outside, the towering trees basked in sunlight, transforming its warmth into the secret magic of growth. The flowers danced gracefully in the golden rays, more vibrant than ever.

Despite the unbearable heat, the height of summer still held its beauty. Xiao, phone in hand, grumbled to herself, “If only I could go swimming right now!”

Slumped discontentedly in her seat, she wore a look of utter reluctance.

The driver couldn’t help but chuckle. “Miss, once you’re back from military training you’ll be able to enjoy yourself as much as you like! The young master has already said he’ll have a swimming pool built at the house. By the time you return, it should be finished!”

He spoke earnestly as he drove, recounting what he’d heard from the young master. Sure enough, Xiao’s mood lifted instantly.

Her earlier gloom vanished, replaced by a bright, energetic spirit, as if she were shining from within. The driver, seeing his young mistress so happy, felt joy on her behalf.

For a while, the car was filled with cheerful laughter. But just as both of them were at their happiest, a massive truck suddenly came barreling down the slope ahead—heading straight for their car.

“Aah!” the driver shouted in alarm.

He jerked the steering wheel with all his strength, trying desperately to swerve out of the way, but there was hardly any room at the roadside.

The car crashed headlong into a streetlamp, and with a loud bang, the impact twisted the vehicle out of shape.

Onlookers immediately called for help. Inside the car, Xiao was grateful for the modifications made to their family vehicles—the advanced safety system had deployed instantly, shielding both her and the driver at the moment of collision and sparing them from death.

The driver turned, anxiety etched across his face. “Miss, are you hurt?”

Shaken but regaining her composure, Xiao blinked and shook her head. “I’m fine. What about you? Are you hurt?”
