The driver, seeing that Xiao was unharmed, breathed a sigh of relief and repeated, “Thank goodness! Thank goodness!” He lowered his head and pressed the button to open the car door. With a beep, the door swung open, and he immediately got out. Xiao followed him out to inspect the situation, and the police arrived shortly thereafter. Xiao walked over to the truck and discovered that it was unmanned—no one was driving it! This seemed rather suspicious.

As everyone gazed curiously at the truck, a man in a mover’s uniform rushed over, drenched in sweat and clearly anxious. He said hurriedly, “I’m so sorry! The brakes seem to have failed! I just went to fetch something, and when I came back, this happened. I really apologize!” He bowed repeatedly as he spoke, and his demeanor didn’t seem deceitful, yet there was something oddly unsettling about him.

A long scar, resembling a whip mark, stretched across his face. It looked familiar somehow, but Xiao was certain she’d never met him before. How strange.

Afterwards, the group went together to the police station, and the accident was confirmed to be caused by brake failure. The chairman of the school board also arrived at the station, for Xiao was the young lady of the Shangguan family. If anything were to happen to her near the school, they would be unable to shoulder the responsibility.

After discussing the situation with the police chief, the chairman took Xiao away. He furrowed his brows deeply from the moment they left the station, and after a long silence, he finally said, “I don’t think this matter is so simple. You’d best not attend this year’s military training.”

He expressed his opinion, feeling it would be best for Xiao to skip the training. After all, military training happened every year, but if something happened to the Shangguan family’s young lady, it would be more than the school could handle. Xiao sat in the car, pondering for a moment before replying nonchalantly, “There’s no need. It was merely a minor accident—I’ll be careful.”

She decisively refused the chairman’s suggestion, believing it was better to participate in the training. She had no interest in joining the freshmen next year; it was a matter of personal dignity, after all. She simply wouldn’t agree.

The chairman harbored deep dislike for this Shangguan girl. Rumor had it she was only a student in Class F—utterly distasteful. If not for the support of the Shangguan family behind her, he wouldn’t even bother with her.

Suppressing his aversion, the chairman tried again, “But this isn’t just a simple incident. If something happens during military training, it would be troublesome.”

In truth, he only wanted to avoid trouble for the school.

Xiao looked at him with a cold smile, and spoke earnestly, “If anything happens, the school bears no responsibility. Is that satisfactory?”

Inside the small VIP car, a one-sided negotiation drew to its close. Outside, the scenery shifted ceaselessly. This summer was destined to be anything but peaceful.

The chairman, seeing Xiao’s unwavering resolve, decided to leave the matter alone. She had already stated the school need not be responsible, so he would simply ignore her. Though he thought this inwardly, he replied with feigned concern, “Is that so? Then you must take care and stay safe.”

Xiao regarded his hypocrisy with disgust and didn’t bother to reply further, merely responding with a casual, “Mm,” before turning her gaze to the window, lost in thought. In truth, she never wished to see this chairman again.
