Yun An, a little girl carrying a schoolbag and wearing a sunhat, walked into the lobby. She glanced around before approaching the front desk.

The receptionist saw the little girl and smiled gently. “Little miss, you can’t just come in here to play. Where’s your mother?”

“I’m here to find someone,” the little girl replied, looking up.

“Who are you looking for?” the receptionist asked.

“Brother Lu Feng,” the girl answered.

“Are you here to make an appointment with Dr. Lu? Is your parent seeing the doctor? Do you have an appointment?” the receptionist inquired with a smile.

“No,” the girl shook her head, then extended a finger pleadingly. “May I call Brother Lu Feng?”

The receptionist picked up the landline and handed it to the girl. “You can, but remember the number, okay?”

The girl nodded and pressed eleven digits on the phone. As soon as the call connected, she chirped happily, “Brother…”

After a few words into the receiver, she handed the phone back to the receptionist. “Brother wants you to listen.”

The receptionist took the phone, her face lighting up in a graceful smile. “Dr. Lu, yes, yes, no problem. I’ll personally take her over.”

She put down the phone, her smile growing warmer as she pinched the little girl’s cheek. “You’re so adorable. Sister will take you to see Dr. Lu. Come, hold my hand.”

The girl took the receptionist’s hand as they walked to Lu Feng’s office.

Lu Feng stepped out and, upon seeing the girl, asked, “Where’s your mother? How did you come here alone?” Then he waved the receptionist away.

The receptionist gave Lu Feng a coquettish smile, but receiving no response, she sighed inwardly and turned to leave.

“My mom said she’d get off work half an hour later. I didn’t want to wait at kindergarten, so I came over,” the little girl explained.

Lu Feng took the small backpack off her and placed it on the sofa. “How did you know I was here?”

The girl pouted. “I haven’t seen Brother for two weeks. I asked Mom where he was, and she told me.”

“There are so many cars on the road; it’s dangerous,” he cautioned.

“No, it’s safe. From kindergarten to here, I only have to cross two pedestrian bridges—no roads to cross,” she said, counting on her fingers.

“Alright, you stay here. I’ll inform your mother first.” Lu Feng sent a message to Chen Lan, then removed the little girl’s sunhat, gently stroking her hair. “Are you hungry? There’s food here.”

“Brother, would you like to come to my house for dinner?” the girl asked eagerly.

“Your mother’s working overtime and has to cook so much. That’s hard for her,” he replied.

Since no patients were waiting, Lu Feng sat on the sofa, lifting the girl onto his lap and teasing her cherubic face.

“Mom is happy, so she doesn’t mind working hard,” the girl said.

“Well, don’t you feel sorry for your mother?”

The girl thought for a moment, then brightened with an idea. “Then how about we order takeout here and wait for Mom to eat together?”

“This is a clinic; it’s not proper to eat here,” Lu Feng shook his head.

“Hmm… then let’s pack it to go!” she suggested enthusiastically.

Lu Feng had a task to attend to this weekend. With everything that had happened, it had indeed been three weeks since he last saw Chen Lan and the girl. He nodded in agreement. “Alright, let’s pack it and eat at home. Let’s order now. Do you know what your mother likes to eat?”

“I know, I know,” the girl nodded eagerly, her eyes sparkling like crescent moons.

...

Lu Feng held the girl’s hand as they went to the garage, then drove the Highlander to find a Yangzhou-style restaurant. He ordered several home-style dishes to take away.

“Can I have some cola?” the girl bounced along beside him, spotting a KFC.

“We’ll buy a bottle at the supermarket to take home, but you can only drink one cup at a time. Too much soda will give you a stomachache,” Lu Feng explained.

The girl nodded vigorously. “Okay, okay, okay…”

After buying everything, Lu Feng drove the girl home.

She tugged his hand as they ran inside, then thoughtfully took dishes from the cupboard, climbed onto a chair, and served the takeout into bowls.

While serving, her finger brushed against some soup. She sneakily put it in her mouth and licked it.

Lu Feng noticed and cleared his throat. “Did you wash your hands? And licking your fingers?”

The girl shrank her neck but smiled sweetly. “I did. I washed them when I got the dishes.”

...

While Chen Lan was working late, she received a message from Lu Feng saying the girl was with him. At first, she felt a mix of anger and worry, but then relief washed over her.

Shortly after, another message came saying the girl had been safely sent home.

After work, Chen Lan went straight home. Opening the door, she saw a table full of dishes.

She looked uncertainly at Lu Feng. “Did you cook this?”

“I bought it,” he replied.

“Mom, Brother and I went to buy Yangzhou food. It’s really good,” the girl said happily.

“I haven’t scolded you yet. Didn’t I tell you to wait at kindergarten for Mom?” Chen Lan chided, frowning.

Pouting, the girl said, “The other kids had left. I stayed alone, and the teacher wasn’t happy.”

“Then did the teacher let you leave by yourself?”

“I said Brother works at Yun An, so the teacher took me there,” the girl said cleverly, covering her mouth with a giggle.

Chen Lan was at a loss for how to scold her properly. She tapped the girl’s forehead and said to Lu Feng, “Let’s eat first before the food gets cold.”

...

“Have you been working overtime a lot lately?” Lu Feng asked casually during the meal.

Since the last time Chen Lan worked late and had Lu Feng pick up the girl from school only to be ambushed by the Big Mouth Gang, she had resolved not to work overtime.

But refusing to work overtime and the boss insisting you do are two different things.

No overtime means you’re out.

Chen Lan’s financial pressure meant she couldn’t just quit, so she gritted her teeth and endured.

“Not often, just on Fridays. Business picks up before the weekend, so I have to work late,” she replied.

“Do you want me to help you find a better job?” Lu Feng offered.

“No!” Chen Lan quickly refused. She wasn’t able to pay the rent herself and didn’t want to accept any more favors from Lu Feng without giving anything back. Even if Lu Feng was willing to play with her body a little, that would make her feel better.

“Oh, then how about this: when you have to work late, have the kindergarten teacher bring the girl to Yun An. I can help look after her,” Lu Feng suggested.

“That sounds great!” Chen Lan was about to agree when the girl clapped excitedly.
