Chapter 109: Resolve to Do It
Knocking sounded on the door three times, then Su Muying’s loud voice rang out. “Sister, get up! Why did you lock the door from the inside?”
Su Muyu suddenly threw the quilt aside, saw Lu Feng still there, and frowned, her face instantly etched with anxiety. “Quick—hide! Hide so Xia Qing doesn’t see you.”
“Why?” Lu Feng’s expression grew grave.
“She’ll be furious if she catches you in my room. Hide first, okay?” Su Muyu pleaded while shoving Lu Feng into the wardrobe. “I’ll coax Xia Qing downstairs. Then you come out. Don’t let her know anything. Please…”
Lu Feng had no choice but to stand in the corner where Su Muyu had once stood dazed. When the wardrobe door closed, his vision vanished into endless darkness. Yet he still felt the raw helplessness of Su Muyu, trapped in that dark corner.
This time, Lu Feng made up his mind. He took out his phone and sent a single message: two words—“Act!”
…
Su Muyu hurriedly straightened her clothes and hair, tucked the soiled quilt away, then opened the door.
Su Muying stood on the threshold, studying her sister with a puzzled frown. Su Muyu’s hair looked disheveled, though Su Muying’s own was even messier, and her pajamas hung crookedly.
Su Muyu stepped forward and gently combed her sister’s tousled hair. “Why don’t you cut it short? Short-haired female officers are very dashing.”
“No, I want mine to stay exactly as long as yours.” Su Muying said, taking her sister’s hand and jumping downstairs.
…
While eating breakfast, Su Muyu kept her head lowered, avoiding Lu Feng’s gaze.
Su Muying gulped down her lean-meat porridge in great mouthfuls, then filled another bowl. She snatched a boiled egg and banged it repeatedly on the table before peeling it. Once finished, she placed the egg into Su Muyu’s bowl and said, “Sister, eat quickly. I’ll drive you to school, then back to the station.”
“Ah?” Su Muyu jolted, then hurried to reply, “I’m not going to class!”
“What’s wrong? I remember you had class this morning.” Su Muying scratched her head, puzzled. “You really do look well—your color is excellent, rosy and healthy.”
“Stop worrying about your sister. Finish eating and go to work.” Su Daoan finished scolding his youngest daughter, then turned to his elder and asked, “If anything feels off, tell Xiao Feng so he can check your pulse.”
“Mmm…” Su Muyu nodded and resumed sipping her porridge slowly.
…
After breakfast, Su Daoan hurried to the company and left first.
Su Muying changed into fresh clothes and kept circling around her sister, voice strangely soft. “Sister, are you truly all right? You seem so different today.”
“I’m fine. You go to the police station.” Su Muyu replied.
“Okay.” Su Muying turned toward the door, spotted Lu Feng still lounging on the sofa pretending to read the paper, and immediately frowned. “Hey! Why aren’t you heading to work?”
“I’ll go later.” Lu Feng answered.
Su Muying immediately grew irritated, hands on her hips. “Are you trying to take advantage of me being gone to do something to my sister?”
“Aiya! Stop being so on edge all the time.” Su Muyu pushed her sister out and practically stuffed her into the car before returning inside.
…
Su Muyu returned to the room and went upstairs to her own bedroom.
Lu Feng watched her climb the stairs, sensed she was hiding something, and followed quickly. He knocked three times on the door and asked, “Are you all right?”
After a long pause, Su Muyu answered, “I’m fine.”
“Open the door. Let me see you.” Lu Feng said.
“I’m okay. Go to the company. Don’t worry about me.” Su Muyu replied weakly through the wood.
Lu Feng refused to leave. “No. You must open the door so I can see you.”
Minutes passed in silence. Lu Feng said nothing and simply waited outside.
Finally, the door opened.
The emotions Su Muyu had buried since breakfast spilled over—disappointment, terror, and raw panic.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Feng gently took her wrist, checking her pulse.
Su Muyu remained silent.
“Is it because you’re skipping school?” Lu Feng pressed.
Su Muyu finally broke, voice trembling with tears. “I’m scared…”
Lu Feng pulled her into his arms, stroking her hair softly. “It’s all right. I’ll protect you.”
Su Muyu cried quietly, words muffled. “They pushed me into a car outside the school. I can’t go anymore…”
At that moment, Lu Feng understood with sudden clarity how fragile Su Muyu’s sense of security truly was. He could only press a gentle kiss to her forehead and let her rest against his shoulder while she wept.
Yet this very girl who had always felt unsafe had once dreamed of becoming a police officer—only to be denied entry to the academy because of her health.
Perhaps she wanted that uniform to armor her heart.
Su Muyu cried for some time before calming. She gently pushed Lu Feng away and said, “You go to the company. I’m fine. Rest here a few days and I’ll be all right.”
“Okay.” Lu Feng nodded. He cupped her face and kissed her forehead, then turned and descended the stairs.
…
Lu Feng slid into the driver’s seat of the Hanlan Da, dialed Xia Yubing’s number, and asked directly, “Have you acted?”
“Already took care of one, but he guessed it was you who wanted him dead. He’s shouting for you to meet him and claims he has a secret to tell you. Want to listen?” Xia Yubing replied.
Lu Feng hadn’t expected such speed. “Is it Ye Wuhua?”
“Yes.”
“Where? I’m on my way.” Lu Feng said.
“Tiger Head Bend, beach iron house.”
When Lu Feng arrived, Xia Yubing sat on the beach, savoring the breeze.
“Why here?” Lu Feng scanned the area.
“You said you wanted to see him. Otherwise I would have finished it in the hotel—much cleaner.” Xia Yubing said unhappily. This was her first kidnapping job.
Lu Feng stepped into the iron house and saw Ye Wuhua bound to a chair, mouth sealed with a cloth gag.
Ye Wuhua’s eyes were wide with terror. The instant he saw Lu Feng, he thrashed weakly and stammered.
Lu Feng took the knife from Xia Yubing and cut the gag. His face dark, he said, “Speak your secret.”
“You promise to release me, then… I’ll tell you…” Ye Wuhua begged for his life.
Lu Feng saw no point in bargaining with a man who clearly had none. He stood. “Throw him into the sea.” Then turned to leave.
Xia Yubing spun the knife and walked toward Ye Wuhua.
“Wait! I really have something important to say!” Ye Wuhua cried in panic as Xia Yubing approached.
Lu Feng said nothing and kept walking.
“New East Society wants you dead. They hired assassins—it’s true! I know you were attacked in Yun’an. It was New East Society’s work. Absolutely true!” Ye Wuhua shouted.
