Chapter 64: The Struggle Between Power and Wealth
Su Daoan pondered for a long time before finally making his decision. “First, come with me to get Lu Feng out on bail. The rest can wait.”
Lawyer Zhao looked at Su Daoan, uncertain. “You’re not thinking of having him jump bail and flee, are you?”
He had guessed correctly—Su Daoan was precisely considering this. If there was no other way, Lu Feng could return to Yunshan. Regardless of the decision, Su Daoan would not allow anything to happen to Lu Feng.
However, for a lawyer, absconding while on bail was a grave matter. The bail money was nothing to Su Daoan, but if Lu Feng fled, Lawyer Zhao could kiss his career goodbye.
Su Daoan took a deep breath. “If things really go wrong, I’ll hire you as Yun’an’s legal representative and compensate you with Yun’an shares. Of course, that’s the worst-case scenario. We still have a chance to win an acquittal, don’t we?”
Lawyer Zhao considered it for a moment, then nodded. “Alright.”
…
Yet, things did not turn out as smoothly as Su Daoan had hoped. The Haizhu precinct refused to grant Lu Feng bail.
Su Daoan tried every connection he could find, but nothing worked. He was exhausted, yet still unable to get Lu Feng released.
Just as Su Daoan was at a loss, he suddenly received a phone call.
“Is this Chairman Su?”
“Yes, this is Su Daoan.” He nodded into the phone.
“Hello, I’m Zhou Fuqu.” The caller introduced herself.
“Oh, Miss Zhou, hello.”
“My mother would like to invite Chairman Su and Doctor Lu to dinner, and to have Doctor Lu re-examine my grandfather. His condition has been fluctuating these past few days, so we hope Doctor Lu can come as soon as possible,” Zhou Fuqu said politely.
A dinner at the Zhou family would certainly be a sumptuous affair.
But that was not the point. Hearing that Old Master Zhou’s illness had worsened, Su Daoan’s eyes lit up. Though such feelings might seem disrespectful toward the elderly man, Su Daoan was genuinely delighted.
He carefully phrased his reply. “Miss Zhou, I’m afraid Doctor Lu won’t be able to re-examine your grandfather in the near future.”
Zhou Fuqu immediately grew anxious. After searching for so many doctors, only Lu Feng had been able to treat her grandfather’s illness. Now, to hear he couldn’t return—how could she not worry?
“Is it a matter of consultation fees? Chairman Su, you may name your price,” Zhou Fuqu said hurriedly.
“No, no, fees are not an issue. Doctor Lu has run into some trouble and cannot come for the re-examination. I’m truly sorry.” Su Daoan was considering how to broach the main subject.
Zhou Fuqu was a shrewd woman, experienced in managing family affairs. Hearing Su Daoan’s circuitous explanation, she guessed something was amiss and asked directly, “What happened? Perhaps I can help.”
Seeing her willingness, Su Daoan spoke up at once. “Lu Feng has encountered some trouble. He went to the Haizhu precinct to assist the police with an investigation, but was assaulted without cause. Young and hot-headed, he fought back. Now the precinct chief is relentlessly pursuing charges against him.”
Zhou Fuqu realized the situation was serious—after all, if Su Daoan, a corporate executive, couldn’t resolve it, it must be grave indeed.
She wasn’t some impulsive young girl. After listening, she considered for a moment before saying, “I’ll see what I can do. Don’t worry too much, Chairman Su—there’s always a way.”
“Thank you, Miss Zhou.” Su Daoan expressed his gratitude quickly.
…
Su Daoan knew the Zhou family would surely lend their support, for Lu Feng was the only one who could treat Old Master Zhou’s illness. The worse his condition became, the more vital Lu Feng was to the Zhou family.
After Zhou Fuqu hung up, Madam Zhou promptly asked, “How is it? When will the doctor arrive?”
“Doctor Lu seems to be in some trouble, I’m afraid he won’t be able to come,” Zhou Fuqu replied.
“What happened? Didn’t he agree to re-examine before?” asked Madam Zhou.
“It appears Lu Feng was arrested for assaulting a police officer,” Zhou Fuqu answered.
“How could that be? That young man struck me as quite decent—well-mannered, knowledgeable, and skilled in medicine. How could he do such a thing?” Madam Zhou exclaimed in surprise.
“I’m not sure myself.”
“Did Su Daoan ask you for help?” Madam Zhou guessed at the content of the recent call.
“He didn’t ask directly, but he clearly wants our help. If we want him to treat grandfather, we must help him,” said Zhou Fuqu.
Madam Zhou thought for a moment. “There’s no rush. Let’s speak with your father first.”
Zhou Fuqu accompanied her mother into the study and recounted the phone conversation to her father, Zhou Zhengqian.
After considering, Zhou Zhengqian said, “I understand. Leave it to me. I’ll have someone investigate and see what’s going on before deciding whether to help.”
“That’s what I thought, but father’s illness is urgent. If Lu Feng truly committed wrongdoing, we can help reduce his sentence, grant him a reprieve, and let him treat father first. If he’s innocent, I think we can lend our support,” Madam Zhou voiced everyone’s thoughts.
“Very well, let’s proceed as such. You may go now—I’ll make some calls,” Zhou Zhengqian said with a wave.
Zhou Fuqu led her mother out of the study.
…
Su Daoan lacked the connections to clear Lu Feng’s name, but at least he could gather some insider information.
After asking around, he discovered the matter was once again entangled with Kanglong Pharmaceuticals.
It turned out that the people from Lianhong Society who attacked Lu Feng that day had been set up by Ye Xinglong of Kanglong Pharmaceuticals and Big Mouth Xiao. One provided the funds, the other the manpower, both aiming to cripple Lu Feng.
When that failed, they resorted to their backup scheme the next day.
Kanglong Pharmaceuticals was a pharmaceutical company with deeper roots than Yun’an Group, backed by powerful forces.
This was why Su Daoan sought a powerful ally—because in business, Kanglong’s influence frequently suppressed Yun’an. Even with superior products and services, they were stifled in every channel and sale.
After Lu Feng was taken to the police station, Ye Xinglong wanted someone to rough him up inside.
Originally, it was just intended as a beating. But Lu Feng fought back, injuring two officers and seizing a gun.
Ye Xinglong seized upon this, planning to have Lu Feng sentenced to eight or ten years. It would not only vent his anger but also strike a blow against Yun’an Group—a double victory.
With this barrage of attacks, Su Daoan truly struggled to cope.
But unexpectedly, the Zhou family’s intervention arrived at a critical moment.
Now Su Daoan hoped the Zhou family would step in. If they did, Lu Feng still had hope of acquittal, and the last desperate measure could be avoided.
