Chapter 104: The New East Society
Seeing that Zhou Fuqu had already grasped the situation, Lu Feng said no more.
Wang Huawen, Zhou Luyang, and Zeng Jian all looked grim, even a little panicked.
Guo Yanzhi wore a face of sheer terror. He had never imagined that someone had actually tried to harm him just moments ago.
Zhou Fuqu’s face had turned ashen. Although her feelings for Guo Yanzhi were not especially deep, and they were not lovers, he was a good and decent man. They lived in the same city, they had been old classmates, and from time to time they would meet for a drink and talk about their school days.
Yet this time, an old classmate had been targeted at her own gathering. It was far too vile.
With a dark expression, Zhou Fuqu took out her phone and was about to call the police.
Zhou Luyang hurriedly stopped her. “Cousin, calling the police right now is not a good idea. If word gets out, what will people think of the Zhou family?”
Zhou Fuqu had already dimly guessed that this matter might be related to Zhou Luyang. She shot him a glare and said angrily, “If we don’t call the police, you think it won’t get out?”
Seeing her snap at him, Zhou Luyang flew into a rage. “Zhou Fuqu, know your place. I’m your elder cousin!”
“Yes, and that’s exactly what disgusts me most,” Zhou Fuqu shot back without giving an inch.
“All right, then let Grandfather judge this. You don’t get to make the rules here!” Zhou Luyang shouted.
“Don’t try to press me by bringing Grandfather into this. I’ve always done things fairly and squarely, and I’m sure Grandfather wouldn’t object,” Zhou Fuqu said.
“That’s not certain. If you want to damage the Zhou family’s reputation, Grandfather will never agree to that!” Zhou Luyang said, refusing to yield.
Just then, a man stepped out of the main house and came to stand before the crowd.
When Zhou Fuqu saw him, she immediately asked, “Secretary Li, does this mean my father and Grandfather already know what happened here?”
Secretary Li was Zhou Zhengqian’s secretary. Since he had come here, it had certainly been on Zhou Zhengqian’s instructions.
In an even tone, Secretary Li said, “You’ve been making a racket out here for more than an hour. It would be strange if the people inside didn’t hear. Old Master Zhou said that the Zhou family must act with fairness and justice. Everyone should do the duties of their own station. Investigating a case is the police’s responsibility. So call the police if you should, and save the man if you should.”
After saying that, Secretary Li left.
Zhou Fuqu ignored those who objected and dialed the police directly on her phone.
Wang Huawen grew nervous and quickly waved to the two models who had been feeding Guo Yanzhi skewers, signaling for them to leave.
The two girls knew trouble was brewing as well. Snatching up their bags, they tried to slip away.
Zhou Fuqu had anticipated this long ago. She had been watching them closely, and when she saw them trying to run, she immediately said loudly, “No one leaves before the police get here! I know exactly who everyone here is. If any of you dare to run now, even if the police close the case, I, Zhou Fuqu, will not let you off!”
The two girls were so frightened that they sank weakly to the ground, pleading miserably, “Young Master Wang...”
“Get lost! Anyone who dares slander me won’t be let off either!” Wang Huawen snarled.
The two girls sat crumpled on the floor, regretting everything to the point of tears.
By the time darkness had fully fallen, the police had already arrived.
Because the incident had taken place at the Zhou family’s estate villa, the municipal bureau attached great importance to it and sent an inspector to lead the team. But after this Inspector Wang learned the details, he was still left with a splitting headache.
The reason was simple: this case involved not only the Zhou family, but the Wang family as well.
And the Wang family controlled the Politics and Law Committee of Haizhu District. In a sense, that made them a superior authority to the municipal bureau. This was no longer merely a difficult case. It was practically impossible to handle.
The only comforting part was that the case was not serious. No one had died; at worst, it was an attempted assault.
Even that description was not quite accurate. The truth was that the assault had succeeded, but the victim had been treated in time. Still, some people simply enjoyed privileges. A man who killed someone with his car could produce a mental illness certificate and walk free at once, let alone when no one had died.
The two girls were taken to the police station, frightened into telling everything after a little intimidation. The matter became perfectly clear, though the offense was not severe. If pressure was applied, it would not even need to be formally filed; a private settlement and some compensation money would be enough to put it to rest.
Still, the relationship between the Zhou and Wang families had begun to take on a subtle and delicate strain.
Wang Huawen was taken to the station for questioning, but within half an hour a lawyer had him released.
The whole affair earned him a severe scolding from the elders of his family, and the resentment in his heart only deepened. In the end, he ran off to a bar to drink.
“Ali, you’d better help me get revenge for this!” Wang Huawen ordered a bottle of the most expensive liquor and dragged over his closest brother-in-arms from the underworld to drink with him.
Ali was tall and a little slouching in manner, with long hair tied back in a ponytail.
“Who’s bold enough to cross our Young Master Wang?” Ali said, lighting a cigarette and taking a drag. He lifted his glass, took a sip of wine, then clicked his tongue appreciatively.
“You find a few men and cripple someone for me. Break his hands, smash his legs!” Wang Huawen said viciously.
“Who? Give me the name, and tonight I’ll make sure he leaves with both hands and feet broken,” Ali replied loyally.
“His name is Lu Feng. Some lame traditional medicine doctor in Yun’an!” Wang Huawen gritted out.
“Again with him...” Hearing the name, Ali could not help frowning. The last time, some rich brat had already spent five hundred thousand just to deal with this man.
“What, you know him?” Wang Huawen asked.
“I’ve heard of him.” Ali was a fighting enforcer for the New East Society. He had looked into Lu Feng and knew that Lu Feng was very good in a fight. So he suggested, “Beating someone up is no fun. If you want to make a person suffer beyond endurance, there are far more interesting methods.”
“What methods?” Wang Huawen immediately became interested.
“For example, go after his woman. Paint the top of his head green,” Ali suggested.
Wang Huawen instantly gave a cruel smile. The remark hit exactly where it hurt, and his expression was wonderfully ugly for a moment. But soon he restrained himself and said, “No. I just got lectured by my elders. I need to keep my head down for a few days.”
“Who said you have to lead the charge yourself? You can always find someone else,” Ali said with a grin.
“There’s someone else who has a grievance against that bastard?”
“Of course. And he’s got deep pockets too,” Ali said.
“Who? With someone like that, I’d like to make a friend,” Wang Huawen said.
“Here. This is his number. His name is Ye Wuhua. His family runs a pharmaceutical company,” Ali said, writing down a phone number and sliding it over.
Wang Huawen picked it up, glanced at it, and a cold smile spread across his face.
Out of shared malice, Wang Huawen soon mixed with Ye Wuhua, and the two of them were often seen coming and going together from the nightlife scene.
On the weekend, Wang Huawen invited Ye Wuhua to the Night Wave Bar in Haizhu District for drinks. While he was getting cozy with a beauty, commotion suddenly broke out in the bar.
“What do you want? Why did you bring me here? My sister is a police officer. If you don’t let me go, she’ll have you all arrested!”
A woman’s voice cried out, trembling with tears.
“Hey now, there’s something worth watching,” Wang Huawen said, rising with his glass in hand and walking over.
Ye Wuhua followed behind him.
With great swagger, Wang Huawen called out to the crowd, “Everyone, get out of the way!”
Several ruffians surrounding the girl stepped aside, revealing the young woman trapped in the middle.
Wang Huawen was just about to turn back and speak to Ye Wuhua when he saw the girl, and his heart gave a sudden jolt. Earlier, when Ali had described her to him, he had not known she was this beautiful. It would be a real shame to let someone else have her.
“Get lost! What kind of skill is it to bully a girl? Did she owe you money or something? How much does she owe? I’ll pay it for her!” Wang Huawen said as he moved in, intending to support the wavering girl.
The script had gone differently from what had originally been planned, but the few New East Society underlings still stepped back.
