Chapter 103: The Terrible Truth
Guo Yanzhi was an honest, good-natured fat man—not really that fat, just a little round in the face, and he wore glasses.
He came to groggily, reached out to clutch his churning stomach, and burned his fingers on the smoldering moxa stick. He yelped and asked, “What... what is this?”
“Acupuncture. Did you not know you had diabetes? Why were you eating so many grilled skewers?” Lu Feng said with a stern face.
“I... I just couldn’t resist. There’s no meat at home... My stomach hurts so much...” Guo Yanzhi looked at the needles stuck into his abdomen, with a burning, cigarette-like stick still attached to each one, and seemed at a loss.
“Two men, help him to the restroom.” Lu Feng glanced around, but did not step forward to help.
Most of those attending the gathering today were wealthy young masters, and none of them were willing to do it.
In the end, it was Zhou Fuqu who called over two servants to help Guo Yanzhi to the restroom.
Only after more than ten minutes did Guo Yanzhi finally shuffle back, looking utterly drained and weak.
Lu Feng wrote out another prescription, had the herbs fetched and boiled, then poured out a bowl and handed it over. “Drink this, and you’ll basically be fine.”
Guo Yanzhi’s stomach was empty now, and he did not care what it was. He took it and drank it down, only to have the bitterness make every fold in his round face crumple up.
A few minutes later, the insulin sent over from the hospital finally arrived.
Wang Huawen immediately had someone put the box of insulin into Zeng Jian’s hands. “Hurry! Give him the insulin.”
Zeng Jian hesitated for a moment, then still took the insulin and walked over to Guo Yanzhi, intending to inject him.
“What are you doing?” Zhou Fuqu asked with a frown.
Wang Huawen stepped up and pulled Zhou Fuqu aside. “Fuqu, don’t obstruct Doctor Zeng. If this fat man doesn’t get insulin soon, he’s going to be dead for sure.”
“Can’t you see he’s already stabilized?” Zhou Fuqu glared at Wang Huawen and snapped angrily.
Guo Yanzhi also felt that he was stable now; his stomach had just been emptied, leaving him a little weak and limp. He refused, saying, “I don’t need that.”
If Guo Yanzhi did not take insulin, then it would mean Lu Feng had saved him. How could Wang Huawen accept losing like that? He frightened him, saying, “You know nothing! Doctor Zeng is a doctor with an overseas medical doctorate. If you don’t get insulin, you’ll be beyond saving in a little while.”
After scaring Guo Yanzhi, Wang Huawen turned to Lu Feng and sneered coldly. “Lu Feng, are you planning to save face for yourself by refusing to give this fat man insulin and letting him die?”
Guo Yanzhi was a little frightened now, and he looked uncertainly at Lu Feng and Zhou Fuqu.
He knew Zhou Fuqu better here, so he hurriedly asked, “Old classmate, what am I supposed to do?”
Zhou Fuqu also did not know whether insulin should be given, so she could only look at Lu Feng.
Lu Feng ignored the gazes of Wang Huawen, Zhou Fuqu, and Guo Yanzhi. He did not look at any of them, only at Zeng Jian, and said slowly, “Zeng Jian, you should know exactly what his condition is right now. An overdose of insulin can also kill a person. Besides, his current condition is diabetic ketoacidosis, not ordinary hyperglycemia caused by diabetes. You should also understand how much effect insulin injection can have in that case.”
An insulin overdose really could take a life, and could even be used as a murder method, silently and without a trace.
Zeng Jian held the syringe filled with insulin and hesitated. In the end, he still backed down. After all, he was a doctor, and to kill someone with this method would amount to shattering his entire worldview.
He put down the syringe and said, “He’s right. The patient’s condition is gradually stabilizing now. As long as he’s rehydrated, he’ll be fine. The insulin can be skipped.”
“Bullshit!” Wang Huawen flew into a rage at once. He strode up and kicked Zeng Jian. “What the hell did you say when you came here? A doctor with a degree from the United States, and this useless trash still can’t compare to a random quack of Chinese medicine! Get lost!”
While everyone else watched the show with interest, Lu Feng suddenly looked at Zhou Fuqu and said, “You organized this gathering. I think you have a responsibility to ensure your guests’ personal safety, so there are some things I have to tell you.”
As soon as he said that, he immediately drew the attention of the people around them.
Wang Huawen, who had been shouting in anger and embarrassment, instantly panicked when he heard this and turned to glare at Lu Feng.
Zhou Fuqu did not understand what Lu Feng meant and asked, “Of course I should ensure my guests’ safety, which is why I’m very worried that Guo Yanzhi suddenly fainted.”
Lu Feng shook his head. “His collapse was not an accident. It should have been deliberate.”
Zhou Fuqu’s pupils shrank, and she asked in disbelief, “Deliberate?”
“Yes. I think you should call the police immediately and wait for them to investigate. Of course, this is your gathering, so the choice is yours.” Lu Feng said.
Zhou Fuqu did not make a decision right away. Instead, she pressed further, “Can you explain that more clearly?”
Just as Lu Feng was about to speak, Wang Huawen instantly bristled and said loudly, “What the hell do you mean, deliberate? You’re looking for trouble, aren’t you? Fuqu organized a barbecue party and invited you. That’s already generous enough. And now you’re spouting nonsense here? Believe it or not, I’ll have someone throw you out!”
Zhou Luyang was also somewhat worried and quickly echoed him. “Exactly. A diabetic fainting, and you can spin that into something intentional? That imagination is a little too wild.”
“Shut your mouths!” Zhou Fuqu already had considerable faith in Lu Feng’s medical skill, and she believed that if Lu Feng were not certain, he would not speak carelessly. So she asked seriously, “Explain it in detail. Why do you say it was deliberate?”
“I didn’t know Guo Yanzhi, and I didn’t know he had diabetes. From noon onward, I only saw someone repeatedly urging him to eat greasy barbecue, and I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it. But if someone knew he had diabetes and still kept forcing him to eat greasy food, all afternoon long, then their purpose would be far from innocent.” Lu Feng said.
Zhou Fuqu frowned and thought back. It did seem that she had seen Guo Yanzhi eating fatty skewers several times, and there were even two young models sitting with him, feeding him.
“If eating a few skewers can be called harming someone, then barbecue restaurants might as well all shut down!” Wang Huawen sneered in mockery.
“Actually, if it were only a few skewers, it might have been accidental. But arranging in advance for the hospital to send over insulin makes people wonder whether the person who made that call had some kind of prophetic power.” Lu Feng said.
Zhou Fuqu’s brow furrowed tighter and tighter. With Lu Feng’s reminder, she also thought of the key point. She suppressed her anger, lifted her sleeve to look at her watch, and said, “It’s an hour and twenty minutes from here to the city hospital, and right now it’s rush hour. No matter how hard you hurry, it’s impossible to get here within an hour. But from the time Guo Yanzhi fainted until now, it’s been exactly one hour. That means someone called the hospital to request insulin twenty minutes before Guo Yanzhi fainted. Is that right?”
In addition, Zhou Fuqu also thought of another suspicious point. She was classmates with Guo Yanzhi and knew very well that his family was merely comfortably off. There was absolutely nothing about him that could have attracted two young models to hover around him. In other words, those two models must have been acting on someone’s instructions.
