Chapter 120: A Clash of Wills
“Now it’s my turn to ask!”
“I have the right not to answer!” Lu Feng’s demeanor was unyielding.
The veteran inspector controlled his anger with ease. Seeing that intimidation wouldn’t work on Lu Feng, he quickly regained his stern, formal expression and said, “You answer my questions. Once I’m done, you can leave. Otherwise, we’ll hold you here for twenty-four hours—you won’t like that, will you?”
Lu Feng nodded. “Fair enough. Ask away.”
“Have you ever assaulted Wang Huawen at the Night Wave Bar? Do you admit it?”
Lu Feng nodded. “Yes, I hit him. Did he call the police? Are you planning to charge me with intentional injury?”
The inspector took a deep breath. “So you admit there’s some grudge between you and Wang Huawen.”
“Let’s get to the point. What’s the use of beating around the bush to prove there’s a grudge between us?”
The inspector, experienced in interrogating all sorts of difficult suspects, remained calm and continued, “Where were you between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. on November 3rd?”
“That afternoon, I was at the outpatient clinic in Yun’an.” Lu Feng thought for a moment.
“Is there a witness?”
“Yes. It was a Friday. An elderly patient came for a follow-up, accompanied by her granddaughter.”
“Name and contact information.”
“The old woman’s health is fragile. I suggest you don’t disturb her. You can verify with her granddaughter, Zhou Fuqu. Her contact’s in my phone.”
Upon hearing Zhou Fuqu’s name, the inspector looked somewhat perplexed.
Wang Yongye, listening from the nearby surveillance room, could no longer sit still. He stormed over, pushed open the interrogation room door, slammed his palm on the table, and glared at Lu Feng with hostile eyes, gritting his teeth. “Stop using the Zhou family as a shield—they won’t save you!”
Lu Feng met Wang Yongye’s gaze calmly and asked, “Are you going to take over the questioning?”
“Hmph!” Wang Yongye waved dismissively and ordered the inspector, “You’re out!”
Though Wang Yongye wasn’t officially a leader at the police station and wasn’t supposed to interrogate suspects personally, rules meant little in the face of power. The inspector immediately stood and left.
“I know—it was you who killed my son. I won’t let you go.” Wang Yongye’s glare was fierce, as if he wanted to devour Lu Feng.
“I’ve heard similar words from you at the Emperor Hotel. My answer remains the same: you’re not worthy!” Lu Feng responded firmly.
“That day at the hospital, I saw you stepping out of the elevator! Admit it—no use denying!” Wang Yongye insisted.
“Fine, I admit it. I killed him. I slit his throat—no harder than killing a chicken.” Lu Feng shrugged.
Wang Yongye froze, uncertain. “You’re confessing?”
“Just kidding,” Lu Feng smiled.
Wang Yongye growled, “What you just said— I could use that in court to convict you!”
Lu Feng abruptly shifted tone, sternly saying, “If a single recording can serve as evidence, then that’s great. How about the confession recording from ten years ago, when your son killed a female classmate and fled to the U.S.? Wouldn’t that also count as evidence?”
Wang Yongye was taken aback, his gaze wavering. He slammed the table and shouted, “Don’t change the subject!”
“The old case from ten years ago is what I want to talk about. Do you think anyone would be interested in a case where the Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission covered up for a murderer’s son and abused his power?” Lu Feng cut in.
Wang Yongye gritted his teeth. “That’s ancient history. Even if you dig it up now, you won’t find any evidence!”
“Oh really? I heard that two male classmates helped your son cover his tracks back then. Are you planning to silence them?” Lu Feng challenged.
When Lu Feng mentioned the old case, Wang Yongye’s first thought was to eliminate those two accomplices. But now, with Lu Feng openly stating it, suspicion crept in—was this a trap?
Wang Yongye’s eyes darkened as he glared at Lu Feng, teeth clenched, “Even if it’s mutual destruction, I’ll still convict you!”
“Fine! I believe that if you could destroy evidence ten years ago, you can fabricate evidence now. But it’s okay—I already have your son’s confession recording. Let’s see if your abuse of power is enough to bring you down!” Lu Feng retorted sharply.
Wang Yongye’s expression fluctuated. Officials abusing power goes unnoticed as long as it’s not exposed. But once it is, superiors act swiftly to protect the government’s image.
Avenging his son? Or clinging to his position?
Wang Yongye’s hatred was gradually subdued by his desire to keep his office.
...
Lu Feng left the police station intact. Before departing, he caught Wang Yongye’s eyes and knew that to preserve his position, Wang Yongye would dare not fabricate evidence again.
The next day, Xia Yubing called with news: the viper from the New East Society was dead.
Lu Feng simply responded with a grunt and hung up. The viper was the thug who dragged Su Muyu to the Night Wave Bar that night. Lu Feng had vowed that anyone who bullied Muyu wouldn’t get away—and he meant it.
However, the viper wasn’t killed by Xia Yubing but by someone sent by Wang Yongye.
Because the viper was one of the two male classmates who had helped Wang Huawen cover his tracks ten years ago.
...
After returning from the police station, Lu Feng showered and changed, then knocked on Su Muyu’s door.
Knock, knock, knock...
Su Muyu opened the door, looking a bit shy when she saw Lu Feng.
He took her hand and led her up to the glass greenhouse on the rooftop, letting the warm sunlight bathe them. “Alright, no need to hide inside all day anymore. No one will bully you now.”
Su Muyu had been hiding at home for a week, always gloomy.
She was troubled deep down but afraid to tell anyone, except Lu Feng. So she sought a bit of safety from him, involuntarily wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her head on his shoulder.
Lu Feng gently stroked her hair, holding her quietly.
With two soft mounds pressing against his chest, Lu Feng couldn’t help but recall the passionate moments from that night.
“Muyu...” he murmured, lifting her to sit on the flower rack, forehead against hers, seeking a closeness they both desired.
Su Muyu was nervous, a little scared, her heart pounding fiercely, yet she couldn’t bring herself to refuse—especially not someone who made her feel safe.
Just then, a loud voice came from downstairs: “Sis... Sis...”
After calling twice, the sound of a door opening and closing followed. Then Su Muqing came running up to the rooftop.
Lu Feng and Su Muyu quickly separated. Su Muyu began watering the plants with an empty spray bottle while Lu Feng watched from behind.
Su Muqing gave Lu Feng a sharp glance before cheerfully grabbing Su Muyu’s hand. “Sis, I’ll help you water... Huh? No water? I’ll get some.” Saying that, she ran off with the spray bottle.
