Chapter 110: The Scene of the Murder
"Xin Dong Society?" Lu Feng finally showed some interest, turning back to look at Ye Wuhua. At first, Ye Wuhua’s words seemed plausible, but upon closer thought, they were utterly unbelievable.
Lu Feng recalled that when he was first attacked by Xia Yubing, he had never even heard of Xin Dong Society, let alone had any past conflicts.
"Yes, exactly, it’s Xin Dong Society. The bartender at Night Wave Bar—he’s the one who recruits killers. I’m telling the truth. Last night’s incident wasn’t my doing, it was Wang Huawen who forced me. I was trying to save Mu Yu, you must believe me, please believe me!" Ye Wuhua stammered, spinning a wild tale, desperately hoping Lu Feng wouldn’t kill him.
Lu Feng frowned, glanced at Xia Yubing beside him, and asked, "What did he just say?"
"He said the bartender at Night Wave Bar is the contact for the assassin organization, and that he hired me through the bartender to kill you," Xia Yubing laughed softly, stripping away Ye Wuhua’s fabrications and translating only the truth.
Ye Wuhua was dumbfounded by Xia Yubing’s words, stunned twice—first because she had sifted the truth from his lies, second because of the phrase "hired me to kill you."
Ye Wuhua pointed at Xia Yubing, eyes wide, and exclaimed, "You’re an assassin?"
"Yes," Xia Yubing nodded. She rarely lied to someone about to die.
"I paid five hundred thousand—so the person I hired was you?" Ye Wuhua pressed.
"Yes. But I only took a hundred thousand. To be honest, the level of assassin you get for five hundred thousand can’t kill him," Xia Yubing replied.
"Hahaha… If only I’d listened to the bartender and paid a million, I wouldn’t have skimped half out of fear the money would go to waste," Ye Wuhua laughed regretfully, pointing fiercely at Lu Feng. "Otherwise you’d be dead already!"
Xia Yubing shook her head and said, "A million wouldn’t be enough, not by a long shot."
"Enough of the lies. Prepare to die in peace," Lu Feng sighed.
"Why! I don’t want to die! Let me go—I can give you money, I’ll have my father give you the whole company. Truly, don’t kill me!" Ye Wuhua pleaded desperately.
Lu Feng couldn’t be bothered to look at him again. He said to Xia Yubing, "Handle it. I’m heading back."
"No! Why kill me first? What about Wang Huawen? He’s involved too—why not kill him?" Ye Wuhua began dragging Wang Huawen into it.
"Stop shouting, it’s unpleasant! That Wang fellow will soon join you. The two of you together—fifty thousand," Xia Yubing replied.
"Fifty thousand? I’ll give you a hundred thousand… no, five hundred thousand! Let me go—stop him, I’ll give you five hundred thousand, even a million!" Ye Wuhua begged.
"It’s not about the money." Xia Yubing readied a cloth to gag Ye Wuhua.
"If it’s not about money, why not kill him? I hired you first. Now I’ll give you ten times the amount—not to kill him, just to let me go and hold him off!"
"Sorry. When an assassin encounters a target they can’t handle, they have to walk away, and refund the payment."
"That’s not right! Why does it cost five hundred thousand to kill him, but I’m only worth fifty thousand?" Ye Wuhua protested bitterly.
"No, you and Wang Huawen together are fifty thousand, not you alone. The price is only about difficulty—I don’t do kidnappings, so your net worth doesn’t matter," Xia Yubing patiently explained to the soon-to-be-dead man.
Ye Wuhua collapsed to the ground, wailing in agony. "What must I do to make you spare me?"
Xia Yubing glanced back—Lu Feng was already gone. She turned to Ye Wuhua and said, "Though I don’t know what he thinks, if it were me, and you so much as laid a finger on my brother, I’d want you dead too." With that, she gripped Ye Wuhua’s head and twisted sharply.
Crack!
…
At Tiger Head Bend, a male corpse appeared in the iron shack on the beach.
After someone called the police, the district station learned first, and the Wang family second—since they controlled the Political and Legal Committee, overseeing law enforcement and judiciary.
…
Since starting her internship, Su Muqing had never encountered a homicide. She had been excited, but when she saw the victim was someone she knew, she nearly vomited.
Covering her mouth, she rushed out of the shack, leaned against the wall, and dry-heaved for a while before she stopped.
"Your father told you to be a household registration officer—such a leisurely job. Yet you insisted on joining the detective squad. Aren’t you just asking for trouble?" Inspector Wang joked.
Su Muqing wasn’t the first to be teased this way. Every newcomer was mocked when they messed up, because the veterans had all been similarly mocked when they were new.
But Su Muqing’s family was wealthy, so most officers didn’t dare to tease her.
Inspector Wang and Su Daoan were old friends, so he felt no pressure joking with Su Muqing.
Su Muqing took a deep breath, forced herself not to vomit, and pointed inside the shack. "I know this person."
"What? You know him?" Inspector Wang asked.
"Yes! His name is Ye Wuhua, a medical university student. His family owns a pharmaceutical company—Kanglong Pharmaceuticals," Su Muqing stated outright.
Inspector Wang, hearing he was a rich heir, knew the higher-ups would be watching this case closely. He waved his hand and said, "Work quickly! The victim’s a wealthy man—if we don’t find the killer, his family might stir up trouble with the leadership."
"Boss, I think we’re in for trouble. The killer’s definitely a pro—the scene is spotless, not a single fingerprint," said one officer.
"Search again, there must be clues," Inspector Wang encouraged. After a while, he asked, "When will forensics arrive?"
At that moment, a sharp female voice sounded, "From notification to now—thirteen minutes, twenty-seven seconds. Inspector Wang, our department is never late."
Looking over, they saw a woman in her thirties, wearing a white lab coat and glasses—a poised beauty.
"How could I accuse Dr. Liu of being late? I’m just anxious. Please examine the body so we can determine time of death," Inspector Wang said with an ingratiating smile.
The poised woman carried her toolbox into the shack, checking the body as she spoke. "Male victim, cause of death—preliminarily judged as cervical fracture, executed cleanly and efficiently. Inspector Wang, looks like you’re in trouble."
"How so?" Inspector Wang asked hurriedly.
"With this killing technique, it’s definitely someone professionally trained—either a career assassin or a retired special forces soldier," Dr. Liu said, checking liver temperature. "Time of death—between nine-thirty and ten this morning."
"An assassin?" Inspector Wang’s frown deepened.
…
After leaving work at the station, Su Muqing was distracted, nearly crashing her car into a tree.
Almost home, she turned around and headed to Yun’an, seeking some tonic to calm her nerves. Just as she left, she ran into Lu Feng.
Normally, Su Muqing was as fierce as a tiger when she saw Lu Feng, but today she seemed listless.
"What’s wrong? Haven’t you eaten?" Lu Feng asked, puzzled.
"I ate, then threw up," Su Muqing replied weakly.
"Why did you throw up?"
"I saw a dead person—and I knew him."
"Who?"
"Ye Wuhua," Su Muqing answered.
"Shh…" Lu Feng quickly put a finger to his lips, signaling silence. "Don’t tell your sister about this—it’ll scare her."
"I know! I don’t need you to tell me!" Su Muqing rolled her eyes at Lu Feng.
