In the early morning, when Lu Feng was half asleep, half awake, he felt something crawl into the bed and snuggle closely into his embrace.

Opening his eyes, he saw a small figure, freshly awakened, smiling brightly at him from just inches away.

Lu Feng reached out and pinched her cheek, asking, “So happy?”

“Yes! I got to see big brother as soon as I woke up. Can I see big brother every morning from now on?” she asked eagerly.

Chen Lan walked in, tugged at the little girl’s ear, and scolded, “Go wash your face and brush your teeth!”

“I’m going to brush my teeth now,” the little girl said as she rolled over, climbed off the bed, and hurried to the bathroom.

...

While Lu Feng was washing up, he saw the little girl brushing her teeth incorrectly. He took her toothbrush, helping her brush while instructing, “You’re brushing wrong. You have to brush like this, up and down.”

“But... this is so troublesome,” she mumbled, her mouth full of foam.

“If you don’t brush properly, your teeth will turn yellow and get cavities. When you smile, you’ll be missing half a front tooth. Wouldn’t that be ugly?” Lu Feng warned.

Startled, the little girl immediately brushed her two little front teeth up and down seriously. After finishing, she swished the water in her mouth and spat it out, then grinned to show off her rows of tiny teeth, asking Lu Feng to check if they were clean.

...

Guo Yanzhi had been locked in the safe house for nearly a week. Xia Yubing was very cautious and refused to let him out no matter what.

He demanded to see Lu Feng, but Lu Feng was too busy to visit. He then threatened that if Lu Feng didn’t come, he would eat candy to kill himself.

Eating candy to commit suicide—this was a unique trick for someone with diabetes.

After leaving Chen Lan’s house, Lu Feng called Xia Yubing and asked her to take him to the safe house.

...

Guo Yanzhi looked a little unkempt after a week, his hair disheveled.

“What do you want from me?” Lu Feng asked as they sat across from each other.

“Why won’t you let me release the recording of Wang Huawen’s confession? I want Wang Yongye to fall. I want him to fall!” Guo Yanzhi was still trapped in the emotions of the previous incident. His volatile personality was hardly suited to being a police officer or studying criminal psychology.

“Do you really think releasing a recording will bring down Wang Yongye?” Lu Feng asked calmly.

“At least people will know he covered up for his son!” Guo Yanzhi insisted.

Lu Feng shook his head. “Your recording at most proves that Wang Huawen confessed. How does that prove Wang Yongye abused his power? Strictly speaking, the recording doesn’t even prove Wang Huawen’s guilt. Anyone could suspect he was forced to confess under torture.”

“I have other evidence!” Guo Yanzhi insisted.

“Fine. Even if your evidence proves Wang Huawen’s guilt, what does that have to do with Wang Yongye? Do you have proof that Wang Yongye abused his power?” Lu Feng asked.

Guo Yanzhi slumped back on the sofa in despair. He wanted desperately to bring down Wang Yongye and get revenge, but he hadn’t considered the actual consequences of releasing the recording.

On careful thought, publishing Wang Huawen’s confession would at most cause suspicion that Wang Yongye had once covered for his son and abused his power, but it wouldn’t provide conclusive evidence.

The best it could do was cast doubt on Wang Yongye among higher-ups, affecting his position and future career—but it was far from toppling him.

Therefore, the recording could only be used to threaten Wang Yongye, to make him abandon the idea of a fight to the death.

Otherwise, with his power, Wang Yongye could easily imprison both Lu Feng and Guo Yanzhi, fabricating evidence to convict them.

Erasing evidence ten years ago was one thing; fabricating new evidence now was just as easy.

But with the recording in hand, Wang Yongye would be cautious. He feared that using such tactics now would leave him vulnerable, so he would have to endure.

...

Awakened, Guo Yanzhi lay on the sofa like a dying fish.

If even the confession recording couldn’t bring down Wang Yongye, he couldn’t think of any way to get revenge.

“It’s over... it’s over...” he repeated listlessly.

“Are you giving up?”

“What else can I do? I spent ten years gathering evidence, but it’s useless. Even if I had another ten years, it wouldn’t help... Maybe by then, Wang Yongye will have risen even higher.”

Lu Feng thought for a moment. “You studied criminal investigation, right? Why not look into other cases?”

Guo Yanzhi frowned, confused and unable to grasp Lu Feng’s meaning.

“Since Wang Yongye abused his power to protect his son, maybe he did other things too. Ten years is a long time. He might have persecuted more than just you,” Lu Feng explained.

Guo Yanzhi’s eyes lit up. Over ten years, Wang Yongye likely committed many wrongful acts; each case could be a crack in his armor.

He immediately sat up, adjusting his glasses. “I get it. I’ll hold him accountable no matter what! I don’t want to stay here. Let Xia Chong let me out.”

“Don’t call me Xia Chong!” Xia Yubing snapped.

...

After leaving the safe house, Guo Yanzhi was like a changed man. He began gathering all files and cases related to Wang Yongye.

He was a top student from the police academy and now a lecturer there. Most of his classmates and students worked in public security, prosecution, and judiciary, so obtaining information was easy.

With the materials in hand, Guo Yanzhi immersed himself in the data, searching for any signs that Wang Yongye had intervened to harm others.

...

In the car, Xia Yubing coughed and said, “Even brothers settle accounts openly. When will you pay my salary?”

Lu Feng handed her a card and said, “Take whatever you want.”

Xia Yubing tossed the card back and said, “Transfer it to my account. I’ll send you the number.”

“Are you short on money right now?” Lu Feng asked.

“Not short, but no amount is ever enough,” Xia Yubing replied.

“Is there a difference?” Lu Feng asked.

“Of course. Being short on money means you might starve or die. Having any amount not being enough means there’s a huge hole to fill,” Xia Yubing explained.

Lu Feng still didn’t quite understand the difference, so he asked, “Do you owe someone a huge debt?”

“No, maybe from a past life,” Xia Yubing shrugged.

“Alright, I’ll have someone transfer the money to you,” Lu Feng said.

“Thanks…”

After a moment of silence, Lu Feng suddenly said, “Can you stop taking contract hits? It’s hard to watch when a woman does this kind of thing.”

“If I don’t work, will you support me?” Xia Yubing rolled her eyes.

“Sure,” Lu Feng replied casually. His income from practicing medicine in Yun’an was high; most patients were wealthy, and just treating a few ailments earned him a lot, so supporting someone wasn’t a problem.

Xia Yubing was momentarily stunned, then waved a hand and said, “You’re crazy. Who asked you to support me?”
