Chapter 19: Agumon S: Burst Mode (Please Support)

That was Agumon S.

Agumon S, a dinosaur-type vaccine Digimon in its growth phase, whose special move is [Mini Blast]. This unique Agumon, distinguished by the red leather straps wrapped around its arms, is believed to have mutated from its previous evolutionary form. Though still weak due to its ongoing growth, its hands and feet bear hard, sharp claws, which grant it considerable power even in combat.

[Mini Blast] was unleashed almost as soon as they spotted Agumon S. Its mouth opened wide, firing a flame projectile charged with an unknown amount of energy straight at the Coronalmon.

At that moment, as no hostility targets had yet been established, Agumon S attacked at random—making Coronalmon nothing short of unlucky.

[Shield of Control] triggered almost simultaneously; another Digimon appeared before Coronalmon, conjuring a shield to forcibly block the attack. Then, this Digimon charged, bracing against the assault and heading straight for Agumon S.

[Superior Sharp Claw] As the Digimon drew near, Agumon S ceased its flame attack. Its claws shimmered with a faint, fire-like digital aura, and it slashed toward the Digimon.

In that instant, the Digimon summoned a great sword, holding it aloft to block Agumon S’s claw. At the same time, it maneuvered the shield to bash Agumon S.

[Mini Flame] The collision sent Agumon S staggering back several steps, while the Digimon seized the advantage, thrusting its sword at Agumon S. But at that moment, Agumon S opened its mouth and launched a burst of flame at the Digimon.

Quickly reacting, the Digimon pivoted, avoiding the flame attack but losing its chance to strike back. Still, the hostility value was now established.

This was fortunate; if the Digimon’s strength hadn’t sufficiently surpassed that of the other nine Digimon, the hostility could have easily been diverted.

[Holy Pierce] Sistermon: White hurled her trident at Agumon S, piercing its chest and back and pinning it to the spot. Originally a finishing move, the difference in power meant it served as a binding technique instead.

Of course, due to the same power gap, this binding wouldn’t hold Agumon S for long. But in the clash of experts, even a momentary restraint could alter the flow of battle dramatically.

[Absolute Light Rush] At the same time, a brilliant light burst forth from the earrings of Foxmon S, forcing Agumon S to shut its eyes.

In that fleeting moment, the Digimon thrust its sword, piercing Agumon S straight through the chest and back.

In the real world, such a wound would have been fatal. But here, in the game world, though Agumon S was impaled, it wasn’t killed—yet its health plummeted by forty percent. This showed that, even if the game didn’t specify, so-called fatal wounds still had their impact.

[Superior Sharp Claw] After suffering the attack, Agumon S’s eyes turned blood-red. Powerful energy erupted from its body, and one claw struck fiercely at the Digimon.

[Shield of Control] In that instant, the Digimon summoned its shield in defense. Almost simultaneously, the Digimon sensed something and activated [Angemon’s Protection].

Boom! The attack was fierce, but Agumon S’s strength hadn’t reached above three hundred total combat points. Thus, [Angemon’s Protection] managed to hold firm.

The next moment, the Digimon swung its sword at Agumon S—but now, the flame-like digital aura that had covered only Agumon S’s claws suddenly enveloped its entire body.

[Agumon S: Burst Mode] Witnessing this, the Digimon showed a hint of surprise and instinctively checked Agumon S’s current status, only to be startled by what he saw.

Burst Mode is a Digimon state; if one likens a Digimon’s digital energy to a reservoir, normally only a few small outlets are open, allowing energy to flow gradually. Burst Mode, however, opens all the gates, causing the flow to surge instantly.

The variant of Burst Mode, known as Destruction Mode, shatters the dam entirely, enabling the Digimon to unleash its greatest power in the shortest time. However, activating Destruction Mode is almost certain death; only in rare cases does the Digimon survive.

Typically, Digimon enter Burst Mode upon reaching the Ultimate stage—the strongest tier, with no higher level. After the outpouring, they merely experience temporary weakness.

Can Digimon below Ultimate enter Burst Mode? Yes, they can. Can growth-phase Digimon enter Burst Mode? Yes, but it is exceedingly rare.

Generally, when a situation demands Burst Mode, the Digimon has enough power to evolve to the Mature stage. Most Digimon choose to evolve rather than enter Burst Mode.

The first activation of Burst Mode carries a high risk of failure—or, more precisely, a high chance of transforming into Destruction Mode. This grants immense strength, but, even if the enemy ceases their attack, death is inevitable.

The Digimon had seen only one growth-phase Digimon with Burst Mode—himself. Truth be told, back then, he was reckless and fearless. Thinking back, had it not been for Lucemon: Fallen Form attempting to seize his body and therefore needing him alive, his first Burst Mode might have instantly become Destruction Mode—leading straight to death.
