The events that followed were straightforward. After paying the necessary fees, there was still over a hundred thousand left, so he simply threw in another hundred thousand to upgrade himself to a private room. The caregiver, however, he didn’t replace—after all, the black-market boss had arranged for him, and regardless of effectiveness, he thought he’d give it a try first. If the caregiver turned out to be inept, he could dismiss them later. If they were competent, he could keep them on. Otherwise, dismissing them right away would be a slap in the face to the black-market boss.

By the time Beasts completed a series of examinations and returned to his room, noon had already come. Inside the room, two people were waiting for him.

One was the landlady. Upon hearing that Beasts had been in an accident, she hurried over. However, Beasts had just gone for his check-ups, leaving her with no choice but to wait in the room. Luckily, there was nothing of value in the room, so the nurses didn’t object to her presence.

The other was Black Snow, who arrived after school. Her father had wanted to come as well, but it was the busiest time at the restaurant, leaving him no time to spare. Since it was midday, and Beasts had ended up in this state because of Black Snow, her father didn’t stop her from visiting.

Both the landlady and Black Snow brought lunch, which resulted in a minor collision—two lunches, but only one patient.

“Hey, why are you both here?” Beasts entered the room, surprised to see the landlady and Black Snow. He walked to the bed under their gaze and sat down.

The landlady approached, worry etched on her face. “I heard you were in trouble, so I came to check on you. Are you alright?”

Beasts nodded, “It’s nothing serious, just a small surgery. I’ll recover soon.”

But his words lacked much credibility. His abdomen was wrapped in bandages, both arms were bandaged, one arm even encased in a plaster cast, and his face bore various small wounds and cuts. Though he no longer bled, he looked quite shocking. Even his forehead was bandaged. In his current state, if he took public transport, people would surely offer him a seat.

Black Snow came over too, her face full of guilt. “Uncle Wang, I’m so sorry for causing you such severe injuries.”

Beasts calmly shook his head. “No need to blame yourself. Those guys weren’t all targeting you.”

Black Snow was startled. “How could that be?”

Beasts then shared his reasoning: the first time he encountered that boy wasn’t at Black Snow’s family restaurant, but the night after he’d saved the landlady, on the main road. That night, Beasts sensed someone following him, and it turned out to be that boy. There were definitely more people tailing him, but it was the boy’s presence that stood out.

Sometimes, the world isn’t full of coincidences. To put it another way, the night after he played the hero, someone started following him. He wasn’t some beautiful woman with fair skin and long legs, but a short, chubby man.

Thus, Beasts surmised that the man who attacked the landlady was likely connected to them. After meeting Beasts and learning his address, the boy began to plan. Last night, though they harassed Black Snow, their intention seemed to be to create a “hero saves the beauty” scenario for the boy. Yet, unexpectedly, Beasts crossed their path, prompting them to shift tactics and target him instead.

So, in Beasts’ view, all three people in the hospital room were entangled in this matter. Of course, whether his conjecture was correct depended on the police’s investigation.

The landlady spoke, somewhat dazed, “So it all comes back to me…”

Beasts shook his head. “Don’t overthink it. If it hadn’t been you, it would have been someone else. It just so happened that you were the one at that particular time.”

In truth, Beasts really did feel it was because of the landlady. If it had been another woman—even Black Snow—he wouldn’t have known her then, and without acquaintance, he wouldn’t have intervened. Not intervening, he wouldn’t have gotten involved with that group, nor ended up in his current state.

But he could see the landlady felt guilty, so he chose his words carefully to prevent her from blaming herself. After all, while Beasts didn’t care much about social circles, it didn’t mean he was oblivious to such matters.

Afterward, the landlady and Black Snow stayed with Beasts and shared lunch. Though two portions seemed excessive, split among three, it was just enough. Then, both girls left.

Black Snow had afternoon classes and couldn’t linger in the hospital, lest she miss her lessons. The landlady left because Beasts simply didn’t want her to stay; with a caregiver, he didn’t need extra eyes on him, which was actually the most efficient arrangement. Hearing Beasts’ request, the landlady didn’t question it, and departed with Black Snow.

After they left, Beasts went to the window and quietly gazed at the scenery outside. Shortly, he saw Black Snow and the landlady laughing and chatting as they appeared in his view. Eventually, Black Snow got into the landlady’s car, and the two drove away together.

Watching this, Beasts silently withdrew his gaze, turned, and walked toward the hospital bed. He’d just undergone a thorough examination that morning, and his report would take some time to be ready. The doctor would discuss the surgery once the results came in.

By Beasts’ estimate, the earliest would be the day after tomorrow. If they rushed into surgery without proper discussion, even he wouldn’t feel at ease. And so, the afternoon’s affairs were about to begin.
